Head of Underwriting | Bristol

We are looking for an experienced bridging underwriter to head up our underwriting team to take us through an important phase of growth for the company.

You will need to be able to show an exceptional understanding of property lending – in particular bridging and development finance – from enquiry through to completion, and be able to demonstrate sound commercial judgement in your decision making and pragmatism in your attitude towards risk.

As the head of department, we are seeking a dynamic, creative and forward-thinking individual who can take ownership of the team and its functions. We are seeking a leader who can manage a team effectively.

Experience and qualifications:

  • 5 years’ recent experience in full lifecycle property underwriting (bridging and/or developments)
  • Prior experience in a managerial/leadership role
  • Proven delivery of projects and targets in previous roles
  • CeMAP advantageous in conjunction with experience
  • Demonstrable experience of applied commercial decision making and handling complex cases
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills (both internal and external)
  • Strong literacy ability across all forms of communication


  • Full lifecycle underwriting from enquiry through to completion
  • Day-to-day underwriting team decision making (subject to lending policy)
  • Being an active member of the Credit Committee
  • Managing and reporting to the Board on the case pipeline
  • Managerial HR duties including training, recruitment and performance reviewing
  • Implementing company strategies within department
  • Developing products, policies and documentation
  • Managing internal and external relationships
  • Seeking out new business opportunities
  • Developing IT systems, procedures and services within the department
  • Assisting with company marketing strategy and campaigns
  • Playing a role in the company’s operational decision-making
  • Supporting other departments/colleagues in various projects
  • Conducting site visits and external meetings where required
